Re: Repatriation of Human Remains
Dear Dr. Haire:
In reviewing the inventory of The Charleston Museum, I have compiled a short list which I have provided below depicting
specifically the location human remains and funerary objects have been retrieved.
37 boxes of human remains Beaufort
County, South Carolina
15 boxes of human remains Charleston
County, South Carolina
1 box of human remains Clarendon
County, South Carolina
1 box of human remains Florence
County, South Carolina
8 boxes of human remains
& funerary objects Georgetown,
South Carolina
1 box of human remains Kershaw
County, South Carolina
2 boxes of human remains Orangeburg
County, South Carolina
3 boxes of human remains Richland
County, South Carolina
The Carolina Indian Heritage Association (CIHA), in the interest of all native tribal groups in South Carolina, makes
claim to all of the above referenced remains and funerary objects held by the Charleston Museum.
It appears that these particular remains have no cultural or geographical connection to the Catawba Indians. Therefore, we request immediate relinquishment of the Catawba Nation's claim to these items.
Should you have any question, please feel free to contact me. With kindest
regards, I remain
Sincerely
yours,
S.
